The installation program requires a Microsoft provided driver, MSCDEX.EXE. This is necessary in order for the Operating System to see your CD-ROM drive. MSCDEX.EXE is provided with DOS 6.x and greater and is normally located in either the c:\dos or c:\windows directory. However, we didn't find it in either location. Please provide a location where this driver can be found.

Choosing OK now results in copying the DOS driver files from their current location to the location specified in the destination directory. The config.sys is modified to include loading the selected drivers. If any problems occur as a result of loading these drivers, backup copies of config.sys and autoexec.bat are made in *.sym so you can restore the original configuration if necessary.
Choosing Cancel now takes you back to the main menu with no changes occurring to your system as a result of running the install program.
Driver Help1
DOS ASPI Manager (required) - ASPI8XX.SYS: This driver provides an ASPI interface for any ASPI drivers or applications that use the ASPI specification to communicate to SCSI devices. It is required for SYMCD.SYS, SYMDISK.SYS. If a SCSI BIOS is present and the devices are under BIOS control, then none of these drivers are required.
CD-ROM Driver - SYMCD.SYS: This driver is used to communicate with SCSI CD-ROM drives. This driver is used in conjunction with the DOS ASPI driver, and requires that ASPI8XX.SYS is loaded first. In order for your system to recognize the CD-ROM drive, MSCDEX must exist in the autoexec.bat file. MSCDEX is a Microsoft driver which Symbios Logic is not authorized to distribute. The line required in the autoexec.bat is :
[path]\MSCDEX.EXE /D:SYM001.
The install utility insures the MSCDEX.EXE exists or is put in the autoexec.bat file. Please note, this /D switch must match the one in the SYMCD driver line in your config.sys file. The path indicates the location of MSCDEX.EXE, for example C:\DOS or C:\WINDOWS. This utility will modify an existing /D switch to match the one put on the symcd.sys driver line.
Disk Driver - SYMDISK.SYS: This driver provides support for SCSI hard drives (with 512 byte and greater sector sizes), removable drives, and optical drives. This driver assigns drive letters (i.e. D: E: F:) for SCSI devices if the device is not currently supported by the SCSI BIOS, or if you do not have a SCSI BIOS. This driver works in conjunction with ASPI8XX.SYS. The ASPI8XX.SYS driver must load first.
Help with your selection
Welcome to the FirePort Install Utility, version 4.03.02.
In this window you have two choices for installing the driver as described here.
1. Complete Installation:
This option is an express installation that requires minimal interaction from the user. It installs all the DOS drivers listed below into the c:\diamond directory. It modifies the config.sys to include the loading of these three drivers. A backup of config.sys is copied into config.sym so you can get back to the previous configuration if necessary.
Since the SYMCD CD-ROM driver is installed, we must also update the autoexec.bat to include MSCDEX.EXE or to modify the /D switch to match the /D switch on the SYMCD driver line in the config.sys file. A backup of autoexec.bat is copied into autoexec.sym.
Without MSCDEX.EXE and the /D switches matching, you will not be able to see your CD-ROM drive.
DOS drivers:
ASPI8XX.SYS - The DOS ASPI Manager driver.
SYMDISK.SYS - Fixed disk, > 512 byte sector support, removable media and optical support.
SYMCD.SYS - CD-ROM support.
ASPI (Advanced SCSI Programming Interface) is a protocol used to communicate to SCSI devices. The drivers for DOS provide ASPI services, while both the CD-ROM and disk driver make ASPI requests from these drivers.
2. Selectable Installation:
This installation choice allows you to choose the individual drivers to install AND to choose the destination directory for these drivers for DOS. Choose this option to turn on 32-bit disk access by enabling FastDisk.
